WETLAND HORROR

DIANA TILDEN-DAVIS

What’s the most dangerous animal in Africa? If you ask around, many people would probably guess a lion. Others might suggest a leopard or crocodile or even a gorilla or venomous snake. Very few people would guess the correct answer—the hippopotamus. These lumbering giants may seem comical, but they are vicious killers. Every year they are responsible for hundreds of fatal attacks on humans in Africa—more than any other animal.

INTO THE WILD

To many people, Diana Tilden-Davis probably seemed like an unlikely person to take on an angry hippo. She was a former beauty pageant contestant who was crowned Miss South Africa in 1991. Later in that same year, she finished as a runner-up in the Miss World pageant.

But for Tilden-Davis, life was more than just swimsuits and hair spray. She grew up in southern Africa and had a deep love for its natural beauty and wildlife. After a brief career as an actress, Tilden-Davis swapped glamour for the outdoors. She started a new life as a tour guide in the Okavango Delta. After years working there, it felt like home to her.
